Title: brake pads
Post by: Clutch on July 20, 2009, 01:20:32 PM
Can you all tell me a good (i.e. cheap) place to get some quality brake pads for my '81 R65 online? I've got the dual disc fronts. I was on the verge of ordering from Bob's but figured someone knew of a better source.

Thanks in advance.

I ordered mine through Chicago BMW about a year and a half ago and it seems I remember Chi BMW's price on OEM was about the same, or a little less, than the aftermarket ones I looked at.  I just checked my records and in early 2007 they were $27 per caliper.

I just checked their web site and it looks like the price will be about $35/set ($42 list) currently.  I have not priced aftermarket for a couple of years...

I installed EBC graphite pads (FA18) on my '81 about two years ago, and I am quite satisfied with them .

Got them from Bike Bandit .

Before the new pads, and new rotors, my wet braking was almost non-existent , I avoided riding in wet conditions at all costs, now, I have now problems in wet conditions .

Costs at the time were real close to OEM pads .

I just scored two sets of FA18 pads on Craigslist, for the LS, $25 total for both sets still sealed in their original package, couldn't pass up that deal .

Clutch,
Check with Mike Morse at Vintage Brake http://www.vintagebrake.com/
If you guys aren't familiar with Mike Morse, he is an amzing guy and valuable resource, putting it lightly. He supplies all the vintage racers and is resonable. I just drove up to his shop in Sonora CA to visit him and his shop.
He will personally answer the phone if you call. Just another option to consider.

Motobins, my favorite as of late, Has both BMW and EBC pads. I usually do well there despite the poor exchange rate, customs & shipping. Have a look if you are inclined.
