I have the standard hi bars on my '83 r65 and they are bent a little from a parked fall it took years ago when the Po took it to a bike rally.
The bend isnt bad but it is notacable and thought about replacing it.
I really like the look of the low bars but wondered if that was a bad idea for unforseen reason?
Would I need to change out any cables or anything?

Personally, I like the look and the riding position with the low "Euro" bars that are fitted to both my R65s. Other riders can't tolerate them -sore wrists, back, etc- and switch to the higher "American" pipe for a more upright seating position... as you already understand.
Your physical size, pain threshold and riding style can dictate choice of handlebars.
The low bar to high usually require some cable swaps. Obviously, you're adding distance from the bar controls to the cable-controlled mechanical units. I'm unsure about the tach wiring harness and speedo cable.
A switch to low bars may entail some creative cable rerouting to avoid buying a full set of new wires. If you get lucky, there may be some R65ers about that could be willing to part with their low-bar cables in exchange for cash, real estate or first born male child. ;)

My 82 R65 came with the standard bars. When I installed my Don Vesco fairing I installed low bars that had a 1" rise to them and road that way for about 4 years. I did not change any cables, hoses or wires. I wanted to beable to go back to the standard bars when I wanted the stock look again. I have since installed the R100RS bars that are flat after I got my R90 and put the RS fairing on it. I really like the position beter than setting upright with the standard bars or on anyother bike that I had before this.

I did the opposite on my 79 R65 when I bought it - switched from the low to std bars. The low bars have been sitting in corner of garage since. They are Magura 1 463-00. Their yours if you want them (just cover the shipping fee) - PM me if you are interested

I changed to low bars and an "S" style fairing couple of years ago. did not have to change anything. I prefer the sportier look and riding position.
