Title: Side Stand Options?
Post by: R65_Mark on April 21, 2009, 09:43:32 PM
My ’85 SWB R65 has the common too much auto-flip side stand issue I read others have.  The Brown side stand seems to be a preferred solution, but I have not tracked down a supplier.  Plenty of folks seem to stock Brown side stands to fit airheads other than the R65.  Any suggestion of a vendor that might have a R65 version (I’m in the U.S. but make regular trips to the U.K and will be in Germany and France sometime this year)?  What’s the difference between the “all other airheads” Brown side stand and a R65 version, and can the former be modified successfully to fit a R65?  Any thoughts on products from other manufacturers?  Thanks.  Mark

Vendor? We gots no stinkin' vendor... for R65's.  ;D

Watch eBay as they show up periodically. You might also try posting a WTB on the IBMWR  http://www.ibmwr.org/market/.

Good luck with your quest.

Is your '85 a Monoshock? Should be, and if so the same stand that'll fit the same-framed R80 and R100 will also work for you.
If not, and you've somehow got an '85 twin shocker (it's happened), try to contact member "beemerrich", who now seems to have vanished from the member listings here. Several of us got our R65 Browns thru him,and they fit well and bolted right up. The difference is about 1.5" less overall length. Some hardcore folks have cut this out of the stand from a larger Airhead and welded everything back up

Maybe Justin can link you up with him if his info is still on file? If not, you're back to watching Ebay, where they do pop up for sale semi-often.
Or, if in Europe, you can go with the adjustable "Surefoot stand", which is basically unobtainable here in the States. Something about customs, exchange rates, all that gub'ment nonsense, etc.

Good luck.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Try Bob's BMW. The catalog advertised Brown side stands for R65 a little more than a year ago. Good Luck!

I love my Brown side stand.   I don't feel like my bike is going to fall over any more.  I got mine through Boxerworks.

I also noticed that they have them at Ted Porter's Beemershop http://www.beemershop.com/
Give them a call or send them an e-mail and they'll know exactly which one you need.  He's a good guy.  I've done business with him and will do so again.

I bought the Brown for Barbi's R65 from Boxerworks when they were having a special.  I bought the one for my R100 monoshock from beemerrich_49503@hotmail.com.  Not sure if this addy is still good or not...

Max BMW has the Brown sidestand but hold your breath when you see the price.  It's around $125.  Tried to buy one for my R100GS but found out it was for the R65.

Oh, and one other comment.  My '75 R90/6 had the flip up side stand.  I found this fix on Duane Ausherman's site.  http://w6rec.com/duane/bmw/sidestand.htm

Don't know it will work for your '85 but it worked for my '75.  It's a really simple fix and takes less than one minute.

Thanks all.  Just to confirm, my R65 is a late dual-shock model.

Nothing on eBay at present, but I’ll keep looking.

At least one of the vendors suggested (Ted Porter’s BeemerShop) has a R65 Brown side stand listed in their on-line catalog for $149 before shipping.

A quick web search shows MOTORWORKS in the U.K. listing a R65 Surefoot side stand for £63.25 including VAT.  Taking off the 15% VAT and doing the exchange rate thing puts this around $80 before shipping.  I’ve sent them a fax and will see where this goes (they are a mile or two away from my sister’s place in the U.K. so a range of payment/shipping options open up.)

I’ll report back in due course.

Mark, your sister will probably have to arrange the sale for you as I seem to remember something about the "Sure-Foot" not being for export to the US.

I just got a Surefoot for mine, direct from England.  I ordered it from Motobins, I believe for around 115 dollars with shipping.  It's nice, and an easy installation.  Removing the old stand was much more trouble, as I had to remove the exhaust to get to the pivot bolt.

It took some getting used to as it is located farther back, right under the left foot peg.  I still have to look down to use it as I'm not used to it yet.

I just checked Moto-Bins and see that the prohibition is for the one where you have to send in your footpeg.  But, they do have a note that they will so it if you send the peg in first.  Put up a pic of it...

I keep forgetting to get a picture to post.   :-[  The R65 stand does not require that you send in your foot peg.  It just bolts to the rear motor mount, with an extension running forward for a brace.  I'll try to put up a picture.  My first thought was to try a write up for the installation but it's too simple to bother with.

...by your command!

I tried to register on the photo album but it says my email address is "invalid".  What's that about?

I don't know, Ed, maybe you're already registered and forgot?  I don't see a user that resembles you but I do stuff like that...  :P

Ed,  Thanks for the pictures, they're going to help everyone understand what the Surefoot option looks like.  I'm heading this way.  Just need to get organized.

Now, if someone can post picture of the Brown, we'd all be able compare/contrast.

Justin - in that photograph it seems like you still have the OEM sidestand on that RT as well??   Are you one of those "belt and suspenders" kind of guys?

Gosh! Doesn't everyone enjoy pulling the freakin' exhaust system just to add a shim washer to the sidestand pivot? Or remove it?  ::) Monte

I ordered a Surefoot side stand from Motobins today.  I'll pick it up while I am in the UK late next week.  When I get back home, I'll take and share pictures pre, during and post installation.  Thanks.  Mark

To get a alternative side stand here in South africa will cost me about US $250

I can order one from England, not sure what make, but it costs 53 pounds ....... then shipping is a whopping 25 pounds.

Just finished installing new SureFoot. This newbie would have appreciated a time-saving hint that the mount was a through bolt and not a stud. Thanks!

Dori & Others, I picked up my Surefoot while in the UK this past weekend.  It looks OK (see pictures) but as Dori says, no instructions.  If anyone has any tips, I'd like to have them.  I plan to tackle the job this weekend.  Mark

If it's like the Brown it will attach via the rear "motor mount" stud.  The little loop looking gizmo on the end, I'm guessing, goes around the frame.  I kind of like that a bit better then the Brown where you relocate the exhaust pipe hanger to the front of the stand bracket...

I think I'd like to combine the two, the basic Brown sidestand with the "loop gizmo" from the SureFoot.

Interesting thread, Can someone please tell me what the main issues are that people are having with their standard side stands?

Cheers Bruce

Mine collapsed and caused the bike to fall over in the garage.

Against a load of push bikes.  I have several dents in my tank now. >:( - £200-300 for a respray.

When it starts to lean over a bit far, get shot of it before it lets you down.  The jaws of the stand broke, rather that the tang on the frame.

I have a surefoot now.  Excellent.

My factory stand poked out too far when up, and dragged on left hand corners.  I hate when that happens.  The Surefoot does not (well, not yet).

I think this is one product that probably doesn't need instructions, if you go out and hold it up to the bike.  Put the bike on the center stand, get your existing side stand out and out of the way.  Remove the nut and washer on the left side of the rear motor mount, offer up the Surefoot stand on that nut with the hook cupping your frame, and replace the nut and washer.  The hard part is removing the stock stand; like Monte says you probably will have to remove the exhaust for that.
