Title: Speedometer info
Post by: BooG on May 05, 2009, 06:47:16 AM
Hi all. Thinking of bidding for a new speedo on ebay. What info do I need to check for to make sure its the correct match for my 1980 R65? Seller just says its from a 1980's R65.
Thanks.

you are looking for the ratio number on the face of the dial.

it should be one of the following:

1.144
1.186
1.112
1.078
or 1.244

I think my '65 is 1.244 but i cant be sure right now because im 50 mile away at work

Both the speedos on my '81 and '83 R65s are W1318. Monte

The 4-digit number in the lower corner of the speedometer face should be chosen to matchup with the final drive ratio of your R65.   IT is possible that someone swapped the rear drive on your bike, so the best was to check for a match is to look at the top of the final drive, on the flat surface near where it bolts onto the swingarm.   You will see a numeric ratio of either 31/9   (most 78-80 bikes had these) or else 32/9 (most R65LS bikes had these and many 81-84 R65). The final drives are all more or less interchangeable on all the dual shock BMW bikes, and sometimes different final drive ratios were offered as dealer options, so it is good to check/confirm.

The W1318 speedometer is intended for use with the 32/9 (3.56) rear drive
The W1276 speedometer is intended for use with the 31/9 (3.44) rear drive.

And, if you want even more info on all BMW airhead speedos, this is Bob Fleischer's page on the subject, which is actually relatively concise and has a useful chart:

If were looking at the same speedo, the seller says it's  from a 1982 model and on the pic it looks like a 1276 ratio which  I know is good for the lightweight flywheel and black airbox models of 1981 onwards.
Check the ratio on your speedo. Also, I suspect, some USA models had different ratios to UK models.

The speedo is a W1276 which is the correct ratio for my 39/9 rear drive. Now all I have to do is run the gauntlet of e-bay bidding! I dislike e-bay quite alot, but I always end up using it! A bit like....well.....things like e-bay..
