Title: GEARBOX CLACKING
Post by: DgM on May 05, 2009, 04:54:32 PM
My 1983 R65 has developed a clacking sound that seems to be coming from the gearbox.  I thought it was the throwout bearing, but removal of bearing showed it to be like new.  Gearbox clack occurs - or is hearable - at idle with clutch engaged in neutral when engine and gearbox are hot.  Cold starting - no clack.  Gearbox shifts well for a bike with 41,000+ miles, no missed shifts, etc.  Gearbox oil change showed no metal filings.  Has anyone out there had similar sounds coming from their bikes?  Is it the gearbox?  Since the sound goes away when clutch is disengaged, is this symptomatic of spline trouble?  Clutch giving up the ghost?  Clutch rod?  What?  Bikes runs fine save for noise.

Pretty much normal operation for an old airhead transmission.

There are some rattles that are pretty much normal with these transmissions, particularly if it is while the bike is sitting still in neutral.
A high precision synchro-mesh transmission with  undercut gears it ain't !
