Title: R80 mono or R65LS
Post by: Landlubber on April 08, 2009, 10:24:27 PM
Hi, thinking of buying a very nice low milage R80. (1988) Any thoughts from current or past owners.

I have an LS now and a R100RS, just liked the naked side of the 80, I once bought a R90/6 new, it was very nice.

I have an R65 mono - it's the best of all worlds.

If the price was right I'd buy it.  You can never have too many...

The price isn't alright, but the bike only has 18,000klm on it, ex Japan model, BM panniers, twin discs and 90S bikini etc etc....he is asking $8000...looks immaculate in pics, going to see it tomorrow, hopefully can get it cheaper...fingers crossed

Personally I like the under 1 liter size. However $8000 is much too rich for my tastes. Depends upon what you want and why. My R1100R was bought for $3700 - I had been in the market for a R100GS when it became available and I could not justify paying a lot more for an older GS. So I still do not do adventure riding but the ABS is nice on the highway.

The low mileage of your R80 is really great - but considering how long the airheads will last not essential. If you have room for the collection and can get it for what you consider the "right" price why not? Otherwise just keep your eyes open for the next one. YMMV

The few R80 bikes I've seen have always been a bit smoother running than the R100 bikes.  They offer some more "grunt" than the later model R65 bikes but not as noticeably a difference as the R100.   I've look at some R80 bikes lately too, but as I am contemplating adding a sidecar to it at sometime, I think the added power of the R100 would be a definite "plus" for that application.  But riding solo, or occasionally 2-up, the R80 is a nice machine.   That price seems steep, though I don't know if there is a conversion rate where you're buying it from?

IF not, another will eventually come along, ya just gotta keep looking and be patient, like a hunter!

Nice bike, but I'd think it would be more in the $5000 range.   There have been very nice bikes sold for less.

That said,  everyone's situation is different.  If it's everything you ever wanted in a bike, and you can afford it, go for it.

Oh dear, Just came back from seeing the bike, certainly not immaculate as described, the R90 type fairing was a copy, bad one too, so no deal, not worth any more than 5K really.

Thanks fellas for your comments.
