Title: Airbox switch; Old ('79) for new (80) Possible??
Post by: fishypaws on April 07, 2009, 05:33:57 PM
Hey Y'all, I have always thought that the old (silver pre 80?) airbox/filter on airheads SUCKED literally and figuratively. Can I upgrade if I find a complete airbox? Are the same carb "horns" gonna be OK?
Let me know O' purveyors of sage wisdom of all things R65....

According to REALOEM.com, one intake manifold, that is the plastic tube from the airbox to the carb, is different on the '79 model year.

Also I am not familiar with the crankcase ventilation system on the '79 model year bikes, but it appears to be a different setup from the '81 and later model year bikes.

But other than those differences, it looks like a pretty straight forward job.

You will have to plug the two holes in the later airbox, where the emissions plumbing was located.

The flat air filter is also about a $30 part, I don't know what the cost is for the round filter.
