Looking at adding one to the bike. I see the BMW kit with the part # 61131391630. Has anyone gone a different/cheaper route to get 12 volt-ability? Not looking for pretty, just a plug to tuck in my under seat tray for the cellphone.

It's fused and can double as a point to attach a Battery Tender.

I've read about people getting outlets from John Deere dealers. I have no idea what they look like, but I don't know what the factory ones look like either. I'm powerless....

I already have a hookup on my battery for my "Battery Doc" charger. It would be ideal to find a 12v socket with a fitting for this existing plug.

From what I gather, the John Deere stuff works with the BMW stuff.
IOW, that is not what rob650 is looking for.

Skimming the web, i keep seeing references to "BMW sockets". Is this some funky size for powering heated clothing? Was the stock socket (on BMW bikes that came with them) a different size than your average 12V power plug in a car?

If you have the standard 2-pin plug such as on a Battery Tender lead (already fused), WallyWorld has a weatherproof 12V socket with a plastic cap that plugs right up, for about $2.69 in their Auto department. I keep mine in a bag or under the seat and use as necessary.
Works great for phones, camera batteries, GPS (although I don't have one...)
Since you've already forced yourself into Wally's, might was well check out the "URL", aka Ultimate Relaxation Laboratories seat pads while you're there. 18 bucks and change, which rival the $150+ "official" motorcycle waffle foam pads sold in shops and on Ebay. Works quite well, and actually looks pretty good too...
ps: and yes, the BMW Powerlet stuff is sized differently.
Great stuff if you can afford it, and all the required adapters too...

Glad I could help. If you're like me, you won't need a fancy $50+ doodad to plug a phone charger into occasionally.
Just don't blame me if $2.69 has turned into $5.79 or something; fuel charges, you know ;)

Glad you're still with us, NC Steve, even thoght the R 65 is sold. Your feedback is invaluable. The seat looks great. Will it fit over the stock R 65 seat?
Also, I did buy a BMW plug socket for airheads ($25) from Matt Parkhouse at the BMWMOA rally. I have a heated vest so needed the BMW plug; I also have an adapter for the cell. Anyway, the bracket that came with it is a mystery. Does anyone have an idea for a makeshift bracket for such a unit?

Thanks for the kind words, Red, but what little I know about Airheads I learned from just reading and asking lots of questions, mostly here. There's folks here with lots more knowledge and skills, for sure! But yeah, I've made riding friends here and still lurk here a bit, and imagine I'll either wind up with another R65 or it's slightly larger, strange older cousin, the R80ST.
But, regarding your bracket question, if it's a standard airhead plug and not the BMW Powerlet-type receptacle, does this bracket look right? It mounts on the R65 on the left side, behind the side cover, in the crook of the rear subframe.

This is exactly what I need BUT it looks like they only sell it in the UK. Its the same connecter type as what is on my " Battery Doc" lead.
Anyone have an idea what the name of that connecter type is? I could buy one of those and splice it into an off the shelf 12v cigar socket.

i got one made by emgo...tucked it up behind the side panel on the left side of the bike. the black clamp blends right in with the frame and side panel, and i'm the only one that knows its there. they run about $15.
