Title: Boyer ignition help please
Post by: scotty_b on February 15, 2009, 11:06:16 AM
78 R65
( duh ) Bike ran fine but as part of my cafe conversion I am eliminating ALOT of the wiring harness to simplify things. I have everything done and all lights and circuits test out fine BUT I have found as I near the end I have 3 hot wires for the coil. turns out whoever wired the thing originally had a feed coming directly from the battery with a jumper wired in thus creating too many hots wires. What I need to know is does anyone have a copy of the wiring schematic or know firsthand the PROPER way to wire the box in? It appears to be a previous gen box as it is black and the new ones are red. I have no part number on it, but the wires are as follows.

4 wire setup: looking at the top of the box, left to right

solid black on the left side of the box ( long lead)

                   solid green on the right
red / yellow tracer on the right
                   solid black on right side

BTW bike still has a dual coil ( stock ) setup, not a fancy digital box coil. I want to keep it this way too 8-) If a pic would help just say so

Thanks, Scott

Ive just had a "mare " with my coil wirering sorted now but found the haynes and clymer wirering diagrams contradicted each other and there is a spare live black wire floating about which is redundant on european spec bikes mine is not electonic on my bike (80r65) but i can let you know the cable colours and teminal numbers on the coils if it helps!!. Bare in mind the tacho and horn feed are on this circuit.

That diagram is  for the newer micro digital setup. Mine is an older more basic unit, and only has 4 wires, where the new ones have 5.

Lou I have the big ass Clymer that covers all models and have also found the diagrams are far from exact. I have several wires in my FACTORY harness that the manual doesan't even have a color for. ON ANY year / model :o I have eliminated the tacj and rewired the horns so they are a non issue as far as the ignition box goes. I think I MAY have it figured out by process of elimination. I labeld 3 of the 4 wires when I took the harness off of the bike, the 4th had a long lead with a ring terminal which I'm pretty certain was a direct feed from the battery. My isues started when I realized the P.O. had to makny jumpers wired ion to make the box work....or so I thought :-/

This might be a good one to stick in the technical FAQ section, as I can easily foresee the topic of Boyer wiring coming up again in the future (as I contemplate whether or not my revenue stream is sufficient to ponder making an offer on an 1980 R100RT)...
