Title: oil pans, sump pickups, and dipsticks
Post by: skyblu79 on March 27, 2024, 02:08:18 PM
I read that an oil pan upgrade for my 1979 might improve oil flow.

I ask those who have done an update what could be better.

My idea would be to look for a deeper oil pan that makes the Oil pickup heads work better.
Maybe from a 1983 R65 or 1991 R100, has anyone done the swap? I read that these oil pans are updated.

Then there are also the Siebenrock spacers, has anyone mounted them?

My doubt is the oil pick-up, how do you measure the working depth?
Does it have to be in contact with the oil pan?
How long should the distance be between the pickup and the pan?

Now I have a steel pickup, without a spacer, but with an internal triangular insert, at first I thought it was a spacer.

This is really informative http://largiader.com/tech/oilpan/ (ftp://largiader.com/tech/oilpan/)

I wanted to fit a spacer, but it would have interfered with the centre stand spring system on my 81 R65. I have a motoren Israel deep sump to fit next oil change. The pickup should not touch, be close but not restrictive. I intend to play dough measure mine and cut a long spacer to match the new. I have 10 to 15mm in my imagination.

Here they now sell used ones at crazy prices. The best, and perhaps cheapest, idea remains the Siebenrock spacers, tripod permitting. They sell them for €120 with gaskets and screws.

Question: Is there something to measure the exact clearance needed between the pickup and the oil pan? So you can choose the right size of spacer

Kids putty. Put a lump in the pan, fit it with a few screws, take it back off and measure the thickness
