If any of you missed it, I cracked up my R65 real bad last Oct. 4. Details here. (http://www.pbase.com/tomfarr/wreck_pictures)
Anyway, we have been having a warm weather streak the last few days, so it is naturally impossible to keep myself from going out into the garage.
No big deal, really. I have just begun the tear-down, and I thought you would like to know.
It looks like the headlight bucket came through undamaged. So that will be up for sale. trolle sold me a complete headlight, so I don't need it.
I also removed the heads and barrels. That left side head is nothing but scrap, now... :'(

The left side head needs to go on a shrine in your garage. Not just anyone can own a piece like that! How are you managing the tear down with your disadvantage. Have you found it difficult? Do you have a helper? Keep us all posted!

I've already learned not to try and work with my dynamic splint (http://www.pbase.com/tomfarr/image/107192088/medium) on! I can be so impetuous at times! ;)
But no, the bad hand isn't slowing me down too much. I can type with 9 fingers nowadays. The pinkie still has two pins in it from follow-up, but they will be coming out next week, I believe. Then, as soon as that scarring heals up, I can go back to taking showers without a plastic bag taped over my hand,
and WEARING A GLOVE! on my left hand! :)

In the spirit of scientific research, I think you should seek out and install an R80 engine into your R65 chassis. I'm sure that many of the folks here would be more than willing to help with ideas and technical expertise.
Perhaps you could obtain a grant from Dr. Bowser with the R65 Foundation, to assist with your ongoing research... ;)

I would agree with NC Steve, if you had not already sourced an engine.
But I would be looking for a late R100 complete drivetrain.......
Who cares about the longer cylinders! Your not on the race track!
So what are you going to do to make it 'special' ;)
Maybe 'Jon P' can help you out with some 'personalisation'

I have already obtained my replacement engine. Last Nov., IIRC! It is a lovely '82 R65 (nikasil, big valves!) with 37,500 miles on it. I consider that an improvement.
I have always had a 650 engine in it (this is my third...), and I think I would miss the "revability" that the R65 has, that I don't think the long stroke engines have.
I got it for $500 + shipping, and it was professionally packaged, so I am happy.
I am not so interested in making it "special", as I am wanting it back on the road, so I can figure out if I have the balls to get back on the death-defying horse. I thought it was already pretty special before I wrecked it!

Yes I remember now. A better motor than what I have - but at least I do have the same heads.
Well its just that I am sat with an R100 and an R65 in my garage and have more than once considered combining the two!
But then I think - What am I going to do with all the bits left over?
And I like having 2 bikes
Keep us posted on your progress. And try to ignore the nutters on the sidelines.

I have owned one R100 engine in my life. That was the engine I put in my /2 conversion rig. One of the guys at the BMW shop at the time (about 4 shops ago...) tried to talk me into putting the big engine in the R65 and the 650 in the sidecar. Heck, my R65 was hardly 5 years old then! I don't think so!
Anyway, I did get to enjoy the power of the 1000, but it was in a totally different package.
