Title: Tyre Question
Post by: Tony Smith on December 25, 2022, 02:21:09 AM
I really do pick poor times to buy tyres, there is a bit of a shortage of old sizes on Australia.

Anyway I have bought Metzlers for the wife's R65/80.

Specifically a ME22 front and a ME77 rear.

Will this be a happy combination? If not , why not?

Hello Tony,
Today, we have to use what we find and pray it will be good and suitable...
The last ME77 I bought was made by Heidenau and was good.
Can't speak about the ME22....

if metzler had to be the brand, those are the tires i'd choose.  I don't love the tread pattern on the me77, but they don't make an me22 for the rear size.

i'm running avon roadriders at the moment and like them pretty well, but like you say, availability is a concern.

Matt I am running Avon's on the R100RS, they were also a forced choice as no tyres were available in my favourite brand (Pirelli) to suit the 19" front.

I have recently had to opportunity to run 600km up on them over 2 days. They do not react the same way as the Pirellis but I guess they are OK.

Let's get real here, at 65 years old I am not up to scratching to anything like the extent I once did, I would call myself "brisk" these days rather than "fast'.

So, whilst not as confidence inspiring as I might like they will stay on untill they reach their useby date and then I will see what else is available. I really do not do many Kilometers on the old bikes these days, in fact over the last 12 months I have probably done 3 times as many miles on the DRZ as I have on the ready of the fleet combined. Of the runners next would be the KLE, then the GSA, followed by the R100RS. I am a little embarrassed but it more than a year since I last rode the R65/860.

Hmm, New Year resolution, improve health and ride more.

After shoulder surgery, I haven't ridden any of my stable in almost five months.  But I can tell I'm getting close, perhaps in February I'll be getting the bikes out again.

Matt, hope your shoulder is recovering OK.

I am still getting over double pneumonia which I caught after meeting the wrong big following my periodic chemo in Sep 2022. I am recovering but it is taking a lot longer than I would like.

A couple of weeks back I went on a 250km lunch ride and that went OK.

Back to tyres.

The ME22 has arrived. I am good that the ME77 arrives in the country next week and I should expect delivery around the 2nd week of March.

I think I will start laying in a set of tyres about a year before I need them.

It's been a while, but I did manage to get back on a bike and even to take the R1150 to Cabo and back, about 4500 miles round trip.  Had to get tires after that excursion, and it took a couple weeks for them to show up.  Next time I think I'll order them direct and have a mobile tire installer do the job instead of the local independent BMW shop.

How is the ME77?

ME77 is a good tire .

I had the same issue with independent shops .
I went cycle Gear, have one 4 miles from me .
Usually get tires in about 5 days, free mounting and balancing .
They offer a road hazard warranty, free replacement for punctures or road debris damage with under 60% worn tires, I think it's about $20

Recently I have replaced the rubber on my F650 GSD and went for the cheaper option of Dunlops, just to stay legal.  Had the rear step out a fraction on a roundabout with only a few kms on it.  Interesting.

Meanwhile I replaced the rear on my K75S and that came to a bit over $200 but I did not complain, as he was whinging about the price of a container to ship the things all the way down here.  Apparently the price has multiplied by about six.  No complaints from me as he has to earn a living.
