Title: Question about MOT in UK
Post by: georgesgiralt on May 31, 2022, 08:54:33 PM
Hi Guys,
As you may know, France is exempt of MOT tests for bikes.
But pressure is drawn upon us to have it enforced and there is a lot of buzz around what and when we will have it.
I would like to know how are treated the old bikes in UK ? Bikes which are older than ABS or mirror or indicator signal or emission regulation ?
Are they required to have a MOT certificate ? How often do they have to be tested ? Are the rules the same as for current production ? Taht kind of information.
Thanks a lot for enlightening me.

Hiya, anything over 40 years old is exempt. However, I think it is possible to keep going with MOT as it is seen as a good thing and could be useful to have in the event of an accident. I don't have any first hand proof of this, but it makes sense to me and I'll keep up the MOT.

Our bike MOT is quite archaic compared to cars and is very flexible. As long as your brakes work, you are not leaking fluids (or your bike  ::) ) and it is mechanically sound, then that is almost it.

What are the reasons for introducing a bike MOT in France?
1. General safety (like ours, good for bikes and other road users).
2. To enforce compliance with standards - there are many and varied - due to poor upkeep / cheap imports / expensive imports that get away with anything.
3. Apply so many compliance checks as to force motorcycles off the road.
4. To get money from motorcyclists (of course).
5. To satisfy a whim because a scooter woke up a politician (of course).
6. Preparation for more draconian measures - if they acceot this (Crimea), they will accept anything (invasion).
7. Someone in power is an avid motorcyclist and want to improve the lot of all motorcyclists (highly unlikely).
8. Something more nefarious!

This is our simple and efficient MOT:
