Howdy folks, I'm new to this website but I've been riding beemers for almost 30 years now. Generally I find low mileage bikes but just recently acquired an '83 R65. I had one about 15 years ago but let it slip away in a weak moment. This is the 4th BMW in my stable (what can I say - it's an obsession!) Anyhow, this one is mechanically sound but cosmetically challenged. My plan is to do a full frame up renewal. Any suggestions on how to remove the old paint on the plastic parts?

I would think if you are going to repaint it you could sand off the old paint using various degrees of coarseness to get a smooth surface. Primer, then respray..

It is my belief that the plastic parts are neither plastic nor fiberglass but a resin compound of unknown, to me, composition. With that in mind it would be difficult to recommend a stripper that would attack the paint yet leave the resin be. That is why on my own LS I chose to hand sand the parts. Hey, they're small 'nuff so why not? Will you be needing to fill in any scrapes gashes or apply a skim coat?

Thanks Monte, you must be one of the few who recalls the halcyon years of motocross back in the days of caster bean two stroke oil and leather pants. Thanks for the link to the repairs. I think it's going to come down to some serious elbow grease to do a really good job. I'll take some pix and post them when I get the chance.

"Serious"? Are you serious, Bengt? ;D All seriousness aside, we're in it for the FUN!
CZ, Maico, Husky, Bultaco... I attended some area motocross schools where the hot shoes had all of 2.5-3.0 inches of rear wheel travel. Oh, the tank slappers we enjoyed.

Oh yeh, I used elbow grease and wet n dry to prep my R65 side panels. Have fun.

Bengt has the way, way loose Latin quotation under his screen name. I've also seen it using illigitimus. Who knows what the actual translation is. Might there be a dead-language Latin scholar amongst us? IMS, believe it was on a desk plate of a historical military/politician/whatever guy when I first saw it. Looks regal, anyway. Monte has it right. Loosely translated it's "don't let the bastards grind you down". Obviously he's a scholar of some renown in addition to recalling all the good old MX bikes. I was always a Penton, Montessa, Husky man myself. Still have a Husky T410 in the garage in need of some TLC. But I digress...
Been looking for my digital camera so I could take some pix of the bike. It's really pretty clean underneat the rat exterior. I think the most expensive part of the resto will be to have the wheels powder coated. A P/O used some of that paint in a can to spray them black. Otherwise, it ought to come together pretty well.
Now where did I put that blasted camera???
