Hey folks, I am finally making some time to work on the ‘84 I have stashed in parts in the shed. First of what will probably be many dumb questions - how the hell do you get the headstem nut off the top of the top triple?
I have tried heat and swearing along with the electric rattle gun and it just won’t move. Someone please tell me it isn’t a left hand thread!

If on your 84 the the head bolt is still a Allen socket. I have used a 3/8 breaker bar and 2 to 3 foot cheater bar over breaker bar. There will be a loud pop when it comes loose. A 1/2 inch or 3/4 would be better. Less chance of the tools breaking.

Thanks for that Don - it had me second guessing. I’ll dig out the breaker and put my back into it - I read the thread about adjusting the bearings and saw it was supposed to be tightened to 80 lb/ft which would explain the pop!

Got the thing apart, now to get the drive shaft out of the swingarm :D

Can’t help you on the drive shaft, haven’t needed to do that yet.

Humm.... Getting the driveshaft out is quite easy if you have the proper compression technique and tool. Putting it back is some sort of a challenge, to put the retaining ring in it's place....
This ring is a sturdy one and it is down below so finding the groove is difficult. I used a 13 mm tube wrench to have the clip open at the correct size, put the wrench on the driveshaft and made the clip down the driveshaft using screwdrivers. Cursing help.
You MUST have a new ring when putting things back. And make sure you do bot create blur on it when putting it back because these blurs could help it escape...
Be careful, the spring is a mighty one
