After spending a couple of hours in a sweltering garage yesterday changing the battery in my R1150RT I realized just how much I love maintenance on our R65 and R100! I would like to have the creep that designed a bike in a way you have to rip off half the bodywork to replace the battery! :rifle: :whip: :behead: :chairshot: :furious3:
That is about a 10 minute job on our Airheads!

That has been one of the reasons I haven’t bought a new bike until I bought the Ural. Bought a used Can Am for the wife. It’s been fun working. Just for an oil change all the left sid bodywork has to come off.

Not convinced the Ural is a new bike, even if it was manufactured in 2021 :)
I do like the look of them despite various horror stories. Reliable as a Chinese watch etc. Fortnine review was possibly the best bit of YouTube he's done.
I've eased into modern (10 year old) cars now. The current Saab is 14 years old and I've caught up with CAN, OBDII, Engine management, electronic diesel injection etc from that generation. Looking under the hood of the latest hybrid is a bit scary. Pure electric less so. Modern bikes are a mystery to me currently although I see the pain with the 'guy who swears a lot' doing Police R1100 repairs (eeek!) :drowning:
I'm very happy with the airhead. Lawn mower tech

Whilst visiting a mate on Friday we welcomed his new neighbour whom we already knew and were chatting about his R1100/1150(?) and an upcoming front suspension change and all that involves. Maybe that is why when I mentioned my R65 he offered to buy it. The offer was declined.

Curious as to what type of work is needed on the front end of the oilhead .
I'm coming up on 80,000 miles, 130,000 km on my '02 1150R and have had to replace the fork seals twice, only about a 90 minute job, that's all I've done on the front end .

Bob,
I didn't take much notice of which model it was but the conversation was about changing the front shocky on the paralever front end. The access was unbelievably difficult and he knows his way around BMWs. :uhoh2: There was also beer involved in the conversation.
When it comes to R series and access, the R100RS/RT is about as complicated as I want to go. Having worked on military aircraft as well, removing panels and components for access is just routine. However in that environment you usually have the support equipment and are not being paid by the hour.
