Post by: wxp on January 11, 2009, 10:49:56 AM
Anyone have a trick for getting the Rear Boot clamp on?? Is there a longer one that can be used??

Thanks

I find that it is easier to have the boot on the swingarm, with the rear clamp on somewhat loosely first, BEFORE I try to get the bolts tight on the output flange/driveshaft.
I can push the boot back enough out of the way to access the bolts.  I then coax the front of the boot over the transmission end, and adjust the boot and put the front clamp on, then give a final tightening of the clamp at the rear.

I don't think that there are different lengths of those clamps.  Are you having trouble getting it to go around the swingarm end or is the bolt/screw too short ?

I'd hate to take it all aprt again just to do that now, will next time, Also the bolt, screw , & clamp are to short I think.  I have several clamps..2 say 85 & one says 83, the 83 is shorter so I was hoping there was an 86 or so..

I can barely get the bolt & thread to touch, not enough to start a thread..

I'll keep trying

Of all the things that I have to do on the BMW it is this one thing that I Hate (with a perfect hatred as the psalmist says) the most.

I think i use both hands with the thumbs on top and the first finger in each side and try to run the edge of the boot over the metal lip with the thumbs close behind trying to force the rubber forward.  This assumes that the boot is already secured on the swing arm.  I think this is how I do it.  I doo remember cursing the engineer's mother that came up with boot clamp bolt about 1cm too short to be really usefull.  Hatred, blind all consuming .......

Did you know there is an up and down orientation with the boot?

Don't forget to lube them well.  With blood.

They are obviously thinner than your typical hose clamp.  I would not be tempted to go to the hardware store to solve this.

Since I don't know what year your R65 is, I can only guess.

For my '79 there is only one size for both the front and the rear - 83mm:

You might just start fresh with two new ones... (but program RealOEM for your year R65.  That page is directed to my frame serial #)
