Title: 1983 R65 Right side battery cover

I'm new to the forum, but so far it's been super helpful.  I found a "barn find" 1983 R65 last summer and decided to strip it down to the frame and rebuild it.  So far that has gone very well.  I've learned a lot about corrosion (lol).  And the bike is looking good as it comes back together.

I've found everything I needed except one thing - the right side battery cover.  I have two left side covers.  But I can't seem to find a right side cover anywhere.  I've made multiple order attempts, and even had someone claim they were sending one from Germany. but it never showed up.  And, all of the order attempts have come back "we can't get that part".

At this point I'm inclined to make a 3d model and have one 3d printed.  But I'd need someone to scan one first.

Does anyone know where I get a new or used right side battery cover for a 1983 R65?

Or, does anyone have one and have the ability to get a 3d scan?  If I can get a 3d mesh I can turn that into something reasonable for 3d printing.

Thanks for any help.  I want to get my tank and fender painted and I'd like to do the battery covers as well (bmw azure blue, of course :-)

Hi, and welcome to the forum! I lost the left side battery cover on my r65 LS a few years ago and sourced one from Moto-bins in the UK without any problem whatsoever. They have 2 types available; an after market one that is prime coated and one OEM.

Being a cheapskate I got the unpainted one and then got a spray can in the correct color from RS Paint : https://www.rsbikepaint.com/en-us/colours.php#makeid=20&modelid=621&prodyear=1983 .

After you replace it it is suggested you use a nylon tie to secure it, as the right side battery cover is the most commonly lost  part on the bike.

Yes, Max (and others) show them, but if you try and order (which I did), they will refund your money and tell you it's not available.

I put in an order to motobins (love their website).  We'll see.  This will be my 5th attempt to order the right side cover...

Before Covid I could order from them on Sunday and have the parts Weds mourning  :clap:

Ok,  I'm now officially a motobins fan boy.  The right side cover showed up today.  I'm impressed.  That was fast.  And, unlike every other place I tried, they actually shipped it.
