Title: 3x the limit
Post by: Luca on August 01, 2013, 07:27:46 PM
Well, I know it's irresponsible, dangerous, and irresponsible...

But I was out with the neighbor, to whom I sold his 85 Nighthawk 650, tearing up some of the southern roads in RI.  Go ahead, yell at me all you want... I'm in a euphoric state after winding the R65 (LS) out to 7k through the sticks, occasionally touching 75 on the 25mph backroads.  If I wasn't on the throttle, I was on the brakes.

I know... I should take it to a track, I could have killed somebody, etc.   But hey, you only get to be young and stupid once.

Gosh, I feel like I've finally met Heidi! (That's her name)

You're not trying to start some sorta confessional thread, are ya, Luca? ;)

My favorite "wind 'em up" test sessions are held on an Interstate 35 service road that's one way, two lanes wide, pretty smooth pavement, no on-off ramps nor ranch entryways.

I've done the ton on both R65s, beyond that on the R100S and still haven't grown a pair big enough to find the upper limit on the 6-speed Triumph Triple.

Whom among us will throw the first stone?

Forgive me for I have sinned. Yada yada yada Blah blah blah [smiley=evil.gif]

ohhhhh, maybe just a touch.  But really, it's like I've discovered a whole new bike.  All the things that I knew were good felt better... the flat torque curve, the handling, the revi-ness of the motor... yet the long pull.  I'm just feeling romantic...  and like a speed demon  [smiley=evil.gif]  Hey, it's a fast bike as long as you don't slow down!

Btw, what do you mean by "done the ton?"

"Done the Ton", "Ton Up Boys" and likely others...

Brit lads on their Triumphs, Beezers, Nortons, etc from back in the day when 100 mph on your motorcycle really meant something. Think Rockers n' Mods.

Wait for it. Some of our UK members may chime in with more historical detail. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Considering the accuracy of most of the motorcycle speedometers I have seen, I wonder how often those "tons" were real. My R65 is just about exactly 5mph over compared to my GPS. On the other hand if I get even close to 100mph, I don't spend much time looking at either one of them.

Not much to add to the history, except for that I concur.  Not that I was old enough to be a party to it all.

I do know that the R65 will get there, if you hold the revs as long as you dare and keep the momentum up.  5th is for pussies!

My '79' used to be able to do it in its CafĂ© Racer guise.  Not so sure now.

I prefer to reset the computer on my GPSr which has a reading of fastest speed obtained, then read it later.

Well I can say that my speedo is quite accurate.  When I re-assembled it, I bench tested it before I put the glass back on.  1 Minute at a touch over 60mph registered a touch over 1 mile on the meters.  I can't remember the numbers exactly, but I did the math.

Afterwards I checked the meters against a measured mile and they were spot on.

I've buried it a few times... so after that I'm just going by rpm.  I thought about nipping the 85mph peg on the gauge face but decided against it.

I should try it again now that I have a speedometer that will read 3 digits (my Vector).  Going by rpms I"ve had my R65 up to about 105.  I'd be embarrassed to go to jail for such a low speed.

The place where I used to try out my vehicles (not the pickups, though) is a long straight stretch and used to have good visiblity to both sides, but the brush has since grown up providing shelter for deer and other nonsense.
