Title: Last night...the beginning of Advent and Christmas
Post by: Semper Gumby on December 13, 2010, 12:08:15 PM
Rode off to sing Compline on the R65 Sunday evening with 9 others at St. Bartholomew's in Atlanta.  28'F when I left the house and windy.

Compline consists of prayers and chants sung in candlelight with incense.

Bidding Prayer:

"Lord Jesus, stay with us, for evening is at hand
and the day is past; be our companion in the
way, kindle our hearts, and awaken hope, that
we may know thee as thou art revealed in
Scripture and the breaking of bread. Grant this
for the sake of thy love. Amen."

Then comes the first hymn: There is no rose by Anon. arranged by John Stevens.  This is not us singing but an example.

Then is sung the Opening Sentences -

"The Lord Almighty grant us a peaceful night and a perfect end. Amen."

followed by

"Our help is in the name of the Lord; The maker of heaven and earth."

Then is sung a lesson.  There are just a couple of short ones.  My favorite is this 1 Peter 5:8-9a

"Be sober, be watchful.  Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.  Resist him, firm in your faith.  Thanks be to God."  When I'm riding the BSA or the BMW on nights such as this I keep a sharp eye out!

Then is sung the Te Lucis Ante Terminum. Last night we did the Samuel Scheidt but there is not a recording of it so I have the Thomas Tallis version which we have sung recently and sounds a lot like US.

Then comes the In Manus Tuas (Into thy hands). Last night we did plain chant but there is not a recording of it so I have a recording of the John Sheppard Version which we also do.

Then was sung the Versicle and Response
"Keep me, O Lord, as the apple of thine eye;
Hide me under the shadow of thy wings."

Then the Kyrie
"Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy."

Then sung the Lord Prayer by John Wilson to a familiar tune by Thomas Tallis.

"Creator of the earth and heav'ns, all hallowed be your name;
Your reign shall come, your will be done in heav'n and earth the same.
Give us our daily bread, and take our sins as we forgive,
temptation banish, evil quench, that by your birth we live."

Then is sung in chant the Collects (prayers)
"Lord, hear our prayer; and let our cry come to you. Let us pray."

"Be our light in the darkness, O Lord, and in your
great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers
of this night; for the love of your only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen."

"Visit this place, O Lord, and drive far from it all
all snares of the enemy; let your holy angels dwell
with us to preserve us in peace; and let your
blessing be upon us always; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."

"Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or
watch, or weep this night, and give your angels
charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord
Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying,
soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the
joyous; and all for your love's sake. Amen."

Then comes the Nunc Dimittis (Song of Simeon)

Then comes the Ave Maria by Jacob Handl for which there is no recoding (drat) - I'm going to have to fix that..

Final responses sung:
"We will lay us down in peace and take our rest;
for it is thou, O Lord, only that makest us dwell in safety.
The Lord is with you; And with thy spirit.
Let us bless the Lord; Thanks be to God."

The final anthem is G.P. Palestrina's "Alma Redemptoris Mater" which is sung divinely here:  We are good but not that good...  8-)

At the end of which we walk out in silence leaving the candlelight and the incense to those still in the sanctuary.

When I got back to my bike and rode to "Shorty's" for pizza and some barley therapy it was 22'F with light snow.  We left when the place closed at 10pm, still 22'F and still snowing and blowing. In fact there was a light dusting on the parking lot.  A lady pulled up as I was getting my gear on and rolled down the window and asked "Should I be worried about you?"  I answered that she needn't worry because I had ridden many times in weather such as this.  And then I pointed to the roundel on the tank and said "besides that I'm riding a BMW" to which she nodded, smiled and left.

BTW - if you would like to know what singing perfection is then watch the following video.  This is that which we as singers all aspire to: straight tone, perfect diction, phrasing, timing and pitch:  Angels among us.

Merry Christmas y'all.
