Title: 2010 BMW MOA Rally
Post by: DeeG on September 16, 2009, 12:53:32 AM
Yes, I KNOW its a little early.....but we have to 'bid' for vacation time months in advance, so I've decided that since Redmond is such a short ride away, ~320 miles, I cannot miss it.  Will be riding the R45 down, and hopefully will have the R75 fixed up and ready for the spouse to ride.

Anyone planning to go??

Redmond where?

I'd go out on a limb and say Redmond, Oregon, about 160 miles southeast of Portland, just about 20 miles north of Bend, Oregon .

I intend to go.  I can't say "plan" as I don't even know when it is.  We'll need the flag, I'm sure.

Mmmmm....it would be a stretch; 2400ish miles for us.

Oh sure, Trick.  That IS a BMW you have, you know!

Of course, I use the same excuse for not attending the Boxerworks rallies.  They are both also held at a time of year when I would reasonably expect snow somewhere along the way.

Sure is a BMW, but it's a 30-year-old BMW in desperate need of an overhaul that would be two up for 2400 miles. Yeesh; not without a hell of a tune-up.

Aww, come on Trick, you can do it.  If this kid can ride from Sydney, Oz to London, UK on a crapped out Honda CT110 moped you can make it across the continent.  http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=460631
Just be sure to bring the Anonymous Book, plenty of cash, and book extra time!  Every ride is an Adventure Ride!!

I know where Trick is coming from. Now Trick let's ask nhmaf from NH if the LS is his bike of choice for the cross-continent ride to Redmond. I trust Nhmaf! He also rides a Concours.
I'll do it if you do it, Trick!!!???  Derek doesn't think it is such a good idea though....he's my partner in crime, Trick.

Mechanically, the R65 should do it, but I can certainly agree that 2-up it would be pretty cramped even packing light.   I'm over 6 feet tall, and while it could be do-able for me to ride solo out there on it, I don't know - the concours is soo much roomier and more comfy...    Knocking off a 600+ mile day on Connie with her big fairing is much easier than on the R65LS..   It may be a moot point anyway as I don't think that I'll be able to take off the 2-3 weeks that I'd want to have for making that trip to the west coast - I like taking the time to smell the roses along the way when I can.

Sue's ridden some big distances on an F650 single, and the newer F650 twin as well.   I rode my LS from NH down to Gray, Tennessee to the rally in July - it was 2.5 days riding heading down and 2 days coming back.   Round trip was ~ 2100 miles and it was a piece of cake, but I don't know how much further distance I'd enjoy riding a basically naked bike now that I'm over 45 and I'm not as flexible as I used to be..

Hi,
I was at Redmon, Ore. for the last MOA rally. I do not remember what year it was, but I remember that a local micro brew was providing the brew. Maybe the reason I can't remember the year was the amount of MONKEY BUTT PORTER I consummed! I will be there at Airhead Central. OLDPAUL.

I'll be there!  All bikes should be running fine by then (I hope).   I want to meet ya'll.   8-)  Well, those that show up anyway.

If you don't have time to ride out, you could fly out and meet us anyway.  I know, not the same.  But better than nothing!  (How do I know this?  sigh)

I still have to write up the Beemer Bash tales.  By the time I get around to it (anyone have any of those lying around?) in the evening, it is too hot where I have my computer and I can hardly stand to sit there for any length of time (excuses, excuses, I know.).  I'll try tonight although we are having another heat wave coming up on us.  Ugh!

What does MOA mean? (To me it says Mall of America but my only knowledge of the US is Minneapolis - one of my daughters is married to a Minnesotan and lives very close to the MOA.)

May I add to that: last week I was in "Mpls", saw quite a few Harley-Davies on the road, a few Japanese fake Harleys and 3 or 4 new type Triumphs. No BMWs. Sorry!

BMW MOA is an abbreviation for BMW Motorcycle Owners of America.

i think single, i could manage, and we could both probably manage two-up, but it'd be uncomfortable as hell.
