Ok, not quite what you think. It is *not* a bunch of riders dressed up like Elvis. Instead, it is fundraiser for the families of fallen firefighters in New Jersey. It is named after a Newark firefighter whose nickname was Elvis.
This year's run was held yesterday. It goes from Rocakawy New Jersey to downtown Newark, New Jersey. Not a large distance, but a fun ride. It is a police escorted run, and they literally close down two U.S. highways and one state highway to any other traffic. It is like a huge parade that goes about 40 miles, and had about 1,500 bikes. All along the route, local fire departments bring out their trucks and show their support Some departments even set up their huge tower trucks and hung giant flags from them. It is really amazing to ride down the highway (2 to 3 lanes wide in a given direction), with no other traffic, and seeing all this support from fireman and just ordinary spectators.
I believe I was the only airhead on the run, and there were probably no more than 10 oilheads. At the end of the run, they have a party with food (dogs, burgers, chicken, salads, etc). beer and soft drinks, and a live band. They also hold a bike show for those that want to enter. I did not enter this year, but maybe next year. I believe mine was the second oldest bike on the run, the oldest being a 1974 Triumph that also entered in the show. (The bulk of the show bikes were customs, but there was also a restored police bike).
If you are in the northern New Jersey area, I recommend this run as fun event.
