OK still in primative stages with the whole crankcase breather. Yes i've already searched previous posts. I'm thinking about having the hose and filter facing the front of the bike, but in the middle of the top of the trans. so my question is, in having a filter (most likely tapered) attached to the hose and with it facing the wind, would oil still come out? and is a special crankcase breather filter needed, or will any kind of air filter do? my rear rim is starting to become a pain to keep clean and my centerstand is covered in grime...starting to wonder if this is a problem too, is this a sign of excess blow by?

I can't answer your question, but, you might like to see this pic of a completely racerised R90s in the BMW museum. The crankcase breather is fed into the 'tail box' to prevent any oil escaping onto track or rear tyres etc. Unfortunately my mind wasn't really on the job when I took the pic and I didn't find out wether it was a collection bottle or filter the pipe was breathing into. Any filter will work. I'm not sure I would necessarily want a 'ram' effect on it, though.

Most common is to route the hose aft of the rear wheel following the rear fender. The hose can be nicely hidden. I've seen racers use a collection bottle. My old Britt stuff simply vents to the atmosphere as the rear. wouldn't advise venting at the middle of the bike. Oil does come out filtered or not and will coat everything. There are special crankcase vent filters. They can be found at many auto parts stores in the Hot Rod section.

just make sure the collection bottle has a vent. the one i am making will have a dip tube lower than the vent mount.

Please explain my fellow hooligan. Maybe a pic or two? I was thinking about making a trick collector like using a NOS bottle or something, maybe puttin that steel braid stuff on the hose...

ya yes my fellow hooligan, please let me try to explain better. also have you meet up with the ton up boys in the chi town area??? if you havent? look them up, cool group of guys who love this every sort of thing, mind you they like their old british iron over our superior baverian made scooters, but we can over look their short comings now cant we ;D
i'm at work so i dont have a way of scanning a drawing and i havent started on mine so i also dont have a pix sorry. i will try to explain it better.
1st. i ran a 1/4" pipe tap down in the breather neck so i could run a 1/4" npt (national pipe thread) on one end of the fitting, the other end has a 3/8" compression tube fitting so i can run some soft copper line back to the catch can. ( i can get you a pick of the fitting cuz i did start that) the copper line (it could be rubber also) i plan on using will run into the catch can. you could do the same type of fitting on the catch can if you wanted like on the breather vent. I am going to run a 3/8" compression bulk head fitting in mine, on the inside it will have about a 1/2" to 1" of more copper tube that goes into the catch can. next to where the line from the breather goes in will be a 1/8" tube coming out which i will put on one of those cone type crack case breather filters you can get from you local car parts place like auto zone. that will allow the excess pressure made in the engine from the pistons to escape through the catch can without spraying oil.
i promise to take plenty of pixs when i do mine, i also am planning on running mine down in that free space next to the clutch arm behind the trans on the left foot side.

A small metal or plastic bottle like an old brake fluid bottle works nicely. Mount it with the lid downward and solder/epoxy a hose connection and a vent in the bottom. When it comes time to empty the can, simply remove the cap, drain, and replace.

yep that is the same basic plan i was thinking, have a small petcock in the bottle to drain without having to remove it to do so.

My R65 has an emissions law rebreather setup piping the crankcase fumes into the carbs. Not wanting to take a performance hit or additional carbon buildup in the combustion chamber while living in a state with lower emissions standards than California, I reworked the breather flange by epoxying a 1/2" PVC elbow fitting to it with JB Weld, drilling a 3/4" hole above the air intake holes in the left air filter cover casting and running a 4' length of 1/2" plastic tubing with a braided core (doesn't flatten at bends) under the left edge of the tool box, along the frame and ending a bit longer than the license plate. All this was held in place with a half dozen black nylon tie straps.
Round the edges of the casting hole. I heated up the edge of the tool box with a propane torch to soften it and pushed it in place to make an indentation that will allow the tool box to sit flat.
